People who get degrees in religious studies…I’m going to go get my degree in Mother Goose now.

People also get degrees in mythology and folklore. I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that religious studies degrees are similar- they don’t learn to follow a particular religion, they learn about religion. Just as an anthropologist learns about other cultures without necessarily converting to them or thinking that the culture they’re studying is the only right one. It’s an important body of knowledge.

Yes they study the subject from an objective point of view; not actually expecting to convert to it. I would argue that studies in modern religions like Christianity and Islam should not be considered equal as studies of ancient mythology. From an Anthropological perspective on studying mythology you can easily see where it is of use; entire cultures, rituals, and building structures built around their myths and legends. I would say that extensive study on these ancient religious text serve great purpose and take great skills that requires a degree of study especially considering that many of the ancient myths come from ancient text not spoken, or written today anymore. Where as the Quran and the bible are still widely believed today, their history has been greatly tracked by historians already, and are in languages spoken today. I can understand touching on these modern religions in literature, history, and maybe even at times anthropology, but to devote an entire degree on just one of the many different deities, religions, and myths, is ridiculous.

I would say this would be a funny debate…but that would discredit the word “debate.” It would more likely be a slaughter.
